In my version of an ideal world, every new website development would start with a definition of the marketing objectives for the site. These, in turn, would be described as a series of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that were meaningful to the business in question. Before commencing work with a new client where analytics is to be deployed for measuring and analysing website performance, there are a few things I like to check out first. Many websites now have Google Analytics tracking code installed as a matter of course, however it is rare to find that any effort has been made to configure analytics to ensure that real value can be gained from reviewing and interpreting the reports. Quite often the first step is to set up a couple of profiles within the account, so that internal usage of the site can be filtered out for example. Setting up some conversion goals is usually the next step, so that contact form or shopping cart completions can be tracked. If the site contains documents for download, or video clips to play, then addtional tracking code may be needed so that these ‘events’ can also be recorded. [click to continue…]
At my last seminar on the use of social media in business, I introduced the topic of formalising some corporate guidelines. No rocket science here just a few precautionary notes covering areas such as:
- creating a social media policy which might be an extension of terms of employement
- providing some education on the standards and style to be adopted for posts and comments
- the importance of writing on areas of personal specialism or expertise only
- documenting clear guidelines covering areas such as intellectual property, client confidentiality, legal and financial matters

Back in April I ran a seminar on Social Networking in Business. My blog entry at the time reflected on the fact that the process of researching for this was itself a most rewarding and stimulating experience. In fact it made me realise how diverse a topic this was and, although I had a reasonable understanding of the key motivators for a social networking strategy, the range of opportunity was even greater than I had imagined.
The seminar was sucessful and I had some very encouraging feedback, which prompted me to run it again in June. Further research prompted some updates and changes to my content, without deviating from the underlying message. [click to continue…]
